Radio World Mobile Network In-house

WLAN, 4G or 5G in buildings: which coverage is right?

WLAN, 4G, and 5G serve different purposes in buildings. To ensure reliable coverage, data, telephony, mobile reception, operational safety, and responsibilities must be considered separately.

Short Answer

WLAN is usually the right foundation for local data communication, internal applications, guest access, and WiFi Calling. 4G and 5G are mobile networks for smartphones, SIM devices, routers, IoT, Push-to-Talk-over-Cellular, and external accessibility. In areas with poor mobile reception, WiFi Calling can help, but it does not replace a complete mobile network in-house coverage. For large buildings, underground garages, industrial areas, or critical processes, it requires measurement and a concept that clearly distinguishes WLAN, public mobile coverage, Private 5G, business radio, and any POLYCOM object coverage.

Many buildings today have very good WLAN, yet still experience poor mobile reception. This is not a contradiction: WLAN and mobile communication are different radio realms. WLAN typically belongs to the building operator. 4G and 5G belong to a mobile provider's network or a dedicated private network. Therefore, it must first be clarified which users, devices, and processes need coverage.

WLAN, 4G and 5G in Comparison

TechnologyStrengthLimitationsTypical Application
WLANHigh local data rate, own control, inexpensive devices. No real mobile coverage and dependent on internet, roaming, and WLAN planning.Offices, guests, tablets, scanners, internal apps, WiFi Calling.
4G/LTEWide smartphone support, mobile data, VoLTE, routers, and PTT-over-Cellular.Indoors heavily dependent on provider, frequency band, building attenuation, and cell load.Smartphones, SIM routers, mobile workplaces, vehicles, IoT.
5GMore capacity, lower latency possible, Private-5G options, and modern industrial applications. Not automatically better indoors; frequency, expansion, and operating model are decisive.Campuses, industries, logistics, video, sensors, private networks.
WiFi CallingCan enable telephony over WLAN in areas with poor mobile reception.Does not provide mobile data coverage, guests without setup or SIM devices.Individual offices, home office, smaller locations with stable WLAN.

When WLAN is Sufficient

WLAN is often sufficient when the focus is on internal data, laptops, tablets, cash registers, scanners, guest access, or telephony via WiFi Calling. The prerequisite is a professional WLAN planning with sufficient access point density, clean roaming, capacity, security, and stable internet connection.

However, WLAN is not the answer to every mobile question. If employees, visitors, emergency personnel, or SIM-based systems need to be reachable directly in the mobile network, additional mobile coverage is required.

When 4G or 5G is Necessary in Buildings

  • Smartphones should reliably make calls and use data without WLAN configuration.
  • Visitors, customers, or external service providers need reception.
  • SIM routers, IoT devices, alarm transmission, or remote maintenance use mobile networks.
  • Underground garages, basements or technical rooms have no reception.
  • Push-to-Talk-over-Cellular, MCX, or mobile deployment apps should function.
  • WiFi Calling is insufficient due to data, roaming, device diversity, or operational reliability.

When Private 5G Can Be Sensible

Private 5G is not a substitute for regular office WLAN. It becomes interesting when an area requires controlled radio coverage, defined capacity, low latency, SIM-based device management, mobile machinery, video, sensors, or industrial processes. Typical scenarios include industrial areas, logistics centers, airports, energy facilities, railway surroundings, and larger campus networks.

For many buildings, Private 5G is oversized. In such cases, WLAN plus mobile in-house coverage or a hybrid concept would be more sensible.

Distinction from POLYCOM, Business Radio, and Object Radio

WLAN, 4G, and 5G do not replace mandatory POLYCOM object coverage in Switzerland. If authorities or emergency organizations require object coverage, this issue must be addressed separately with the relevant authorities, planners, and radio specialists.

Business radio is also its own category. DMR, TETRA, NXDN, or other professional radio systems are used when group calls, robust voice communication, emergency calls, direct operation, own repeaters, or local fallback levels are critical. A good building concept can therefore incorporate WLAN, mobile communication, business radio, and POLYCOM in parallel.

FAQ

Is WLAN better than 5G in buildings?

Not necessarily. WLAN is often better for local data and controlled building networks. 5G is better when SIM-based mobility, mobile services, Private-5G features, or external accessibility are required.

Is WiFi Calling sufficient in areas with poor mobile reception?

For telephony, WiFi Calling can be sufficient if the WLAN is stable. However, it does not replace full mobile coverage for mobile data, guests, SIM devices, or critical areas.

Is 5G in buildings always better than 4G?

No. The actual quality depends on frequency band, expansion, building attenuation, cell load, antennas, and end devices. In some buildings, LTE is more stable than 5G.

What is the first step when coverage is poor?

A structured measurement: WLAN, mobile providers, rooms, frequency ranges, telephony, data rates, and affected processes should be evaluated separately.

Can Motcom plan WLAN?

Motcom places WLAN in the context of professional communication and supports radio coverage, mobile in-house radio, business radio, POLYCOM distinction, and hybrid communication concepts.
