Motcom connected three data center locations for Digital Realty with Motorola IP Site Connect, dispatcher control center, indoor positioning, and emergency signal for personnel.
Project Overview
| Client | Digital Realty (formerly Interxion) |
|---|---|
| Industry | Data Centers / Colocation (critical infrastructure) |
| Location | Three data center locations in the Zurich region |
| Object | Three data centers with server rooms, technical and security areas, basement levels, and outdoor areas; highest standards of availability, security, and access control |
| Service Area | Digital Business Radio (MOTOTRBO) with Motorola IP Site Connect, Dispatcher Control Center, and Localization |
| Scope of Services | Radio planning, DMR infrastructure, IP Site Connect networking, Dispatcher Control Center, localization, personal emergency signal, commissioning, maintenance contract |
Initial Situation
Digital Realty (formerly Interxion) operates several data centers in the Zurich region as critical infrastructure. Reliable, site-crossing radio communication was required for operations, security, and facility management – both within the expansive server rooms and between the individual locations. The existing silo solutions did not allow for seamless communication across the three sites. Additionally, a centralized control center and the ability to locate employees in the partially shielded server rooms, technical rooms, and basements were lacking – both crucial for scheduling and lone worker protection.
Client Requirements
- Seamless radio communication within and between three data center locations
- Site-crossing networking over the existing IP infrastructure (WAN) via Motorola IP Site Connect
- Centralized Dispatcher Control Center for operations, security, and facility management across all locations
- Localization of the radios in server rooms, technical rooms, and basements (lone worker protection)
- Highest availability and redundancy according to the demands of critical infrastructure
Solution by Motcom
Motcom implemented a digital business radio system based on Motorola MOTOTRBO. Through Motorola IP Site Connect, the repeaters of the three locations are connected via the existing IP network to form a single, site-crossing radio system – one participant can reach all three data centers with a single call. A centralized Dispatcher Control Center consolidates voice communication, scheduling, and alarm management across all locations. Localization is performed indoors using beacons and outdoors via GNSS, allowing the control center to see the position of all devices on a map at any time. A personal emergency signal and dead man's function protect lone workers and automatically trigger an alarm with location information in case of an incident.
- Analysis and Measurement
- Radio coverage evaluation per site (server rooms, technical rooms, basements, outdoor area) and assessment of the IP connection
- Planning and Engineering
- Concept for repeaters and antennas per site, IP Site Connect networking over the WAN, control center, localization, and redundancy concept
- Implementation
- Construction of DMR infrastructure at three locations, IP networking, installation of localization beacons, and setup of the Dispatcher Control Center
- Acceptance
- Site-crossing functional and localization tests, availability and redundancy proof, PNA alarm tests, documentation
- Operation
- Maintenance contract with remote monitoring, network management, and periodic testing of localization and personal emergency signal
Client Testimonial
It was important to us that our teams could communicate across all three data centers as if they were in the same location. Motcom understood our requirements early on and delivered a solution that performs – including localization when it is needed.
